The
reconnaissance is the small military unit providing important
field information of the enemy and terrain. They operate in
small platoons of eight soldier, dividing into two patrol
units of four soldiers. They are inserted in the area either
with their BV202/BV206 carrier, snowmobile, small boats, helicopter,
parachute or with their own feet. They sneak into the target
invisible by the enemy, walk around the object finding out
all about numbers and type of the enemy, what they are doing
and what it looks like they are planning to do.
They are well trained to dig an observation post (OP) into
the ground, and camouflage it against thermal signature. The
only thing coming out from the OP is the radio antenna, and
the observation binocular. The recon man does not leave his
OP for weeks. Every thing he does, is done in the little hole
in the ground, surrounded with his three companion soldiers.

The Recon is the first Norwegian Cavalry unit
that was active after the WW2. The headquarter was placed
in the UK.

Units in the Army and Home guard can get the task to surveillance
a road intersection or other strategically important points,
but the Cavalrys Reconnaissance is trained for long distance
reconnaissance, far into enemy territory. They have learned
to live what the nature supplies, and how to escape. They
have gone through courses learning to get out of enemy contact.
The goal is to se, without being seen. They avoid opening
fire towards the enemy, and use as little as possible of their
7,62mm ammunition in their AG3 automatic rifles.

The Recon teams does not engage any enemy forces.
If they are fired upon, they will evacuate emidiately.

The
recon units in the Cavalry har a close teamwork with "Hærens
Jegerkommando" (Special Forces). Each year a student
from the Cavalry Officer Academy, Recon is chosen to become
an officer in the Jegerkommando. A "Jeger" is known
by it's burgun beret, while the rest of the cavalry wears
a black.
In order to get the mission successful, the recon man is
dependent on one thing... his portable radio communicator.
Without the radio, he can't sent reports back to his commander,
and his knowledge of the enemy is useless.

The Recon units is far from friendly forces.
That is why they are specially skilled in survival, medic,
signals and more.
